Which dry eye treatment is right for me?
There is more dry eye treatment available today than ever before — IPL, LipiFlow, Tixel, Rexon-Eye, prescription drops, lid-hygiene programmes. If you have been reading about them, a fair question follows: how on earth do you know which one you need? The honest answer is that you cannot choose the treatment until you know what kind of dry eye you have. That is why, at our Hamilton clinic, treatment never comes first. Measurement does.
Why the same word covers different problems
“Dry eye” is really several conditions wearing one name. Most people have evaporative dry eye, where the oil glands in the eyelids are blocked and tears evaporate too fast. Some have aqueous-deficient dry eye, where the eye simply makes too few tears. Many have a mix. Each pattern responds to different treatments — and a treatment aimed at the wrong mechanism is money and time spent for little return. This is exactly why drops so often disappoint: they add water to what is usually an oil problem.
What we measure before recommending anything
A Dry Eye Evaluation at Rose is built around measurement, not guesswork. We use tear-film analysis, infrared meibography to image the oil glands themselves, tear osmolarity, and staining of the ocular surface. Together these tell us which kind of dry eye you have, how advanced it is, and — crucially — how much gland function you still have to work with. You leave that appointment understanding your own eyes.
How the plan follows the measurements
Once we know the pattern, the treatment choice becomes rational rather than random:
- Evaporative dry eye with glands still worth saving often points toward warming-and-clearing treatments — LipiFlow or IPL, which have the strongest evidence behind them.
- Lid-margin and inflammatory disease may favour IPL or Tixel, alongside a structured lid-hygiene programme.
- Mixed or aqueous-deficient dry eye that has not responded to heat-based treatment is where an option like Rexon-Eye earns consideration.
- Most plans combine two or three approaches — and we re-measure afterwards so you can see, objectively, whether your glands and tear film are responding.
An honest promise
Dry eye is a chronic condition. We can very often reduce your symptoms substantially and improve how your glands work — but we manage the condition rather than cure it, and we will always tell you plainly what a treatment can and cannot do for your particular eyes. Our optometrists are therapeutically qualified, so prescription treatment can be part of the plan where it helps.
The first step
If drops are not working, that is not a sign to buy more drops — it is a sign your dry eye deserves proper measurement. Book a Dry Eye Evaluation at our Hamilton clinic and we will show you what is actually happening on the surface of your eyes, then build the plan around it. If your eye is painful, very red or light-sensitive today, phone us on (07) 847 3195 rather than booking online.
