Protecting Your Child’s Eyes: Choosing the Right Sports Eyewear

share article

As parents, we naturally think about helmets, shinpads and appropriate footwear when preparing our children for sport. But howoften do we consider protecting their eyes?

From a dispensing optician’s perspective, good sports eyewear is an important part of a child’s protective equipment. Whether your child enjoys football, cycling, tennis, cricket or other active sports, their eyes can be vulnerable to accidental impact, dust, wind and harmful UV exposure.

For children who wear glasses, ordinary everyday frames may not always be suitable for sporting activities. Specialist sports eyewear can provide a more secure fit, helping to reduce the risk of frames slipping or breaking during play. Impact-resistant lenses, such as polycarbonate, can provide an additional level of protection and are particularly valuable for active children.

For outdoor activities, it is also important to consider UV protection. Children spend considerable time outdoors, so protecting their eyes from ultraviolet radiation is an important part of maintaining healthy vision.

Most importantly, sports eyewear should be comfortable, secure and correctly fitted. Every child is different, and the best option will depend on their age, prescription and chosen activity.

As a dispensing optician, my advice to parents is simple: protect their eyes as carefully as you protect the rest of them. The right eyewear can help children stay safe, comfortable and confident while enjoying the sports they love.
