How to help kids care for their glasses

share article

As an Optical Consultant, I love helping children get the most from their glasses so they can see clearly, learn confidently, and enjoy all the adventures that come with being a kid. A few simple habits can make a big difference in keeping spectacles comfortable, clear, and in great condition.

Encourage your child to clean their glasses using the micro fiber cloth and cleaning spray provided. If cleaning spray isn't available, lukewarm water and a small amount of mild dish soap work well too. Gently drying the lenses with a soft tissue or clean cloth will help keep them looking their best. Clothing might seem convenient, but it can scratch lenses and damage coatings over time.

When glasses aren't being worn, their safest place is in their case. If your child needs to put them down for a moment, encourage them to place the glasses with the lenses facing upwards to help prevent scratches.

Frames and lenses don't cope well with extreme temperatures, so it's best to avoid leaving glasses in places that can become very hot, such as a car on a warm day.

Children are naturally active and love to play, climb, run, and explore. If your child is heading to the playground or taking part in rough-and-tumble activities, a spectacle cord can be a great way to help keep their glasses safe and secure. If glasses aren't needed for the activity, encourage your child to place them safely in their case or ask a teacher or trusted adult to keep them somewhere safe until they're needed again.

As children grow, their glasses can take a few knocks along the way. Bringing them into the practice every six months or so allows us to check, clean, and adjust them, helping to ensure they remain comfortable and fit correctly.

Teaching your child to put their glasses on and take them off using both hands can also help keep the frame balanced and properly aligned. Well-aligned glasses are more comfortable to wear and help children enjoy the clearest vision possible.

At the heart of what we do is helping children see their world clearly and confidently. With a little care, spectacles can continue to support your child's vision, learning, and everyday adventures.
